IOWA CITY, Iowa (Jan. 14, 2022) – In their second meet of the 2022 season, the Texas Woman's University Gymnastics team posted a 189.300 team score against the University of Iowa.
"Today was a day full of opportunities," TWU head coach
Lisa Bowerman said. "We got to see a lot of new faces in line-ups and gain a lot of great competitive experience. This team has a lot of heart and a lot of fight. I know they will use tonight to continue to grow stronger as a team."
Heart and fight proved to be the big descriptors of the Pioneers performance tonight. Although they were missing some of their veteran gymnasts, the Pioneers competed and flexed their depth against Iowa.
Iowa, in their second meet of the season, posted as 196.125 team score to win the meet.
TWU recorded their highest total score on the vault, with freshman
Emerson Adams, a freshman, leading the way for the Pioneers with a 9.775 in sixth place overall.
Mara Johnson finished fifth with a 9.750, and
Sierra Muns scored a 9.700 to place eighth.
Steelie King rounded out the top 10 on the vault with a 9.650. Tied for 11th,
Madeline Gose and
Beth Lazarus each posted a 9.600.
On the floor exercise, Johnson led the way for the Pioneers, recording a 9.800 to place seventh, as TWU scored a 47.975.
Muns, a freshman, busted her career high on floor, which she set last week in Florida, with a new personal best of 9.775. With Muns setting the tone, the floor exercise proved to be the career high sweet spot for TWU, as two more Pioneers boasted new personal bests.
Lexi Leake recorded a new career high with a 9.750, breaking her previous mark of 8.725 (set at Centenary on March 12, 2021). Adams performed her collegiate debut tonight and scored an 8.900. Finally, Gose scored a 9.750, as the Pioneers only had five performances on floor.
Posting an identical score on beam as on floor, Gose tied for sixth on the beam with a 9.750. In her collegiate debut,
Emily Six scored a 9.600 to finish eighth. Muns rounded out the nines for the Pioneers with a 9.450. Lazarus posted a personal best on beam with an 8.950, and King scored an 8.875. Freshman,
Lainey Hunt, also had her collegiate debut tonight on beam and recorded a 7.875.
TWU opened the meet on the uneven bars, scoring a team score of 46.225. Leake topped the Pioneer leaderboard with a 9.575. Second, Johnson finished with a 9.500, followed by
Maddie Griffith, who recorded a personal best of a 9.375. Muns tied for 10th with a 9.150 and Lazarus finished 12th with an 8.625. King closed the scoring for TWU with a 7.600.
Freshmen Muns competed in all four events for the first time in her career and finished with an all-around score of 38.075.
The Pioneers will host their 2022 season home opener against the University of Pittsburgh on Saturday, Jan. 22 in Kitty Magee Arena at 6 p.m.
