DENTON, Texas (Feb. 10, 2023) - It was a home opener sweep this Friday as Texas Woman's (4-3) softball dominated Western Oregon (5-4).
The Pioneers weathered through an overcast and strong winds to open the season at Dianne Baker Field. In game one of the double header, the Pioneers scored three runs to the Wolves' one, followed by game two with one run, for a shutout over the Wolves to cap off the night.
To kick off the night, Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor Inductee and TWU alumna Bailey Vrazel Hammack threw the ceremonial first pitch of the season. Vrazel is a four time All-American, LSC and TWU Pioneer record breaker, and was a top nine finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year from 2014-2015.Â
With her many accolades, she was named to the LSC Hall of Honor for being an outstanding individual who has brought pride and honor to the LSC and Texas Woman's University. Vrazel is now the third Pioneer and only TWU student-athlete to be inducted into the LSC Hall of Honor.Â
In addition to Bailey Vrazel's honorable night, the Pioneers proved themselves honorable, as they forced the Wolves' pitcher, Maddie Mayer (3-1), to record her first loss of the season in game one.Â
Alyssa LeBlanc (3-2) started in the the circle for the Pioneers in game one. Although the Wolves were able to score a run, the Pioneers shook off the first inning and found their sweet spot in the third and fourth.Â
In the bottom of the third inning, Ciana Rodriguez saw nothing but space and opportunity as she advanced to first base, forcing the fielders to make a choice between her or Missy Wise, who checked out on second base.Â
Rodriguez proceeded to steal second, while Kennedy Marlow walked to first base. Tylar Lane took to the plate and hit a single out to left field that led her to second, Marlow to third, and Rodriguez to score the first run of the night and her first career run.Â
However, the Pioneers weren't finished yet. LeBlanc held the Wolves scoreless in the top of the fourth with three strikeouts back-to-back.Â
LeBlanc batted first in the bottom of the fourth, as Kate Franz subbed in as a pinch runner and took second from a double to center field by LeBlanc.Â
A single from Avery Boley allowed Franz to score the second run of the night. Lily Wilson scored the third run, after entering as a pinch runner for Avery Boley, Wilson stole second and third and crossed home on an error by the Wolves. Â
The Pioneers held the Wolves unresponsive in the last three innings, recording no runs, hits, or errors for the remainder of game one.Â
The same could be said for game two as the Wolves were unable to answer the Pioneers. Franz was given an opportunity to score off a wild pitch in the bottom of the third inning. Kelsie Briggs (1-1) registered the win for the Pioneers from the circle in game two.Â
TWU was aggressive in the circle recording 14 strikeouts, disabling the Wolves offense. Marlow and Wilson played a crafty game and registered two stolen bases each.Â
The Pioneers had a successful home opener and are set to take the field again on Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in Austin, Texas against St. Edward's.Â
