Lisa Bowerman became the head coach of the TWU gymnastics program following Frank Kudlac’s retirement after 33 years on May 31, 2011.

A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Bowerman is a veteran member of the Texas Woman’s University athletics staff. Prior to moving into her current position, she served one season as the associate head coach (2011), three seasons (2008-10) as the team’s assistant coach and three seasons (2005-07) as the graduate assistant coach.

Bowerman led the Pioneers to her 11th USAG National Championship appearance where TWU placed second after advancing to the finals for the third straight year.

In 2025, the TWU Gymnastics Coaching Staff was named the 2025 College Gymn News Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Invitational Championship Coaching Staff of the Year. They claimed their 13th National Championship winning the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics National Invitational Championship.

In 2024, the Pioneers concluded another historical season after finishing with the highest team score in a season opener, highest team score in a home opener, largest home crowd, highest score on floor and highest NQS. She coached Kaitlyn Hoiland to Individual National Runner-Up on vault and five USAG First Team All-Americans. Bowerman also coached six CSC Academic All-District athletes and two Pioneers to individual program records - Daisy Woodring on vault (9.950) and Kaitlyn Hoiland on bars (9.950).

In 2023, Bowerman coached Daisy Woodring to the individual national championship on vault and also coaced five CSC At-Large Academic All-Americans, including Woodring who was named the CSC At-Large Academic All-American of the Year.

Bowerman led the Pioneers to their 12th USAG National Championship Title in program history and her third as a head coach. She also coached Isabel Goyco to her second individual national championship, as Goyco repeated as the champion on the floor in 2022. Leading up to the USAG title, the Pioneers also won the Midwest Independent Conference Championship in Kitty Magee Arena. The Conference title marked the first under Coach Bowerman.

In 2021, Bowerman helped coach two gymnasts to individual national championships in 2021-- Madeline Gose won a title on vault and Isabel Goyco won her title on floor.

Bowerman recorded her most wins in 2017 leading the Pioneers to victory at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championship for the first time in her career as a head coach. She coached seven of her athletes to 12 USAG All-American honors and was named NACGC/W Division II Co-Head Coach of the year with an overall record of 13-14. Bowerman was also named MIC Head Coach of the year and led her Pioneers to a second-place finish. The team captured six weekly MIC honors as well.

Following the 2017 season, Bowerman and the Pioneers repeated as National Champions and took second place at the MIC Championships. In defending their title, the Pioneers claimed their 11th National Championship with record-breaking flair, posting the best score in Pioneer and USA Gymnastics history with a 196.525.

In 2016, Bowerman led her team to a third place finish at the MIC Championships. In 2015, Bowerman guided the Pioneers to a fourth place finish at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships and a second place finish at the Midwest Independent Conference Championships.

Bowerman has played an instrumental role in the Pioneers’ continued program success. She helped coach the team to the Midwest Independent Conference (MIC) Championship in 2006 and 2010. Her leadership also helped the Pioneers claim their eighth and ninth USA Gymnastics (USAG) Collegiate National Championships in 2006 and 2008, respectively. Bowerman has also guided three TWU beam workers to USAG Collegiate National Titles on beam - Courtney Arno (Templet) in 2006 and 2008, Rachel Zimmerman in 2007, and Brittany Johnson in 2010.

Bowerman was tabbed the USA Gymnastics Ken Anderson Collegiate Head Coach of the Year, MIC Coach of the Year and NCAA Division II Coach of the Year in 2014.  She also earned the 2011 NCAA Division II Assistant Coach of the Year, the 2008 USAG Collegiate Assistant Coach of the Year and MIC Assistant Coach of the Year honors in 2007, 2010 and 2011. Bowerman led Schyler Jones to the NCAA Regional Competition as well as two alternates. The Pioneers placed second in the MIC Championship.

Before coming to TWU, Bowerman enjoyed an outstanding gymnastics career at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. As a freshman in 2001, she was an integral part of an ISU team that advanced all the way to the NCAA Regionals. After a knee injury sidelined her for the entirety of the 2002 season, she returned to the competition floor and qualified as an individual on beam for the 2003 NCAA Regionals. In 2004, her senior season, she served as the Redbirds’ team captain and once again qualified as an NCAA regional competitor on beam. Bowerman earned a place in the Illinois State record book when she set (and still holds) the Illinois State beam and floor records with scores of 9.95 on both events.

Bowerman got her start in gymnastics at GymQuarters in O’Fallon, Missouri where she trained under the direction of Scott Cusimano, who, ironically enough, was the TWU gymnastics assistant coach from 1979-1983.

Bowerman made her initial foray into coaching as Illinois State’s student assistant coach in the fall of 2004. She graduated with honors and received her Bachelor of Science degree from Illinois State in December 2004. In May 2008, she received her Master of Science degree in Exercise and Sports Nutrition from TWU.

Bowerman lives in Denton with her husband Jeff, their son Austin, and their daughter Kyla.
