DENTON, Texas (OCT. 14) – Four players recorded double-digit kills for TWU led by freshman
Elizabeth Pennington with 13 as the Pioneers defeated Cameron in four sets on Friday night in Lawton. TWU won 25-18, 25-20, 20-25 and 25-21 to capture its fifth straight win and improve to 15-7 overall and 9-3 in the Lone Star Conference.
The Pioneers started the game slow as they fell behind 6-0 in the first set. TWU regrouped and went on a 10-4 run to tie the score. The Pioneers held Cameron to -.050 hitting percentage and captured a seven-point win.
In the second set, TWU had just three unforced errors for a .333 hitting percentage. After both teams traded the first 10 points, the Pioneers pulled ahead 12-9 after scoring seven of the next 11 points. The Aggies responded by score the next six points to take the lead. TWU answered with a 7-3 run to regain the lead before winning the set by five points.
In the third, Cameron built an early 8-5 lead and extended it to five points, 20-15. The Pioneers had eight unforced errors and hit just .078 in a five-point loss.
In the fourth set, TWU fell behind 4-1 and trailed 8-4 before scoring the next five points to take the lead. The Pioneers used another 6-1 run to take a 15-11 lead and held on for a four-point win.
"It was hard-fought win on the road," said TWU head coach
Shelly Barberee. "We played well in the first two sets before struggling in the third. We regrouped in the fourth to close out the game. It's nice to have four players in double-digit kills. Our block was much better today after struggling last weekend against Texas A&M-Commerce."
Other standouts for the Pioneers included senior
Jaqueline Santos with 11 kills and junior
Hillary Shaffer and sophomore
Mallory Kuechle with 10 kills each. Senior
Morgan Wilson posted a TWU team-high 25 digs while junior
Joey Redwine had 42 assists for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers will return to action when they travel to Wichita Falls, TX, to face Midwestern State on Saturday, Oct. 25. First serve is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
