Pioneers cruise to 32-point win against Adams State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Nov. 14) – The TWU Pioneers opened the game with an 18-0 run and never looked back as they cruised to a 79-47 win over Adams State at Ashbrook Classic hosted by Midwestern State.  With the win, TWU is now 1-1 on the young season.

The 32-point win is the biggest margin of victory for TWU since Nov. 18, 2011, when the Pioneers defeated Oklahoma Panhandle State, 110-76.

Senior Ashley Salazar led three TWU players in double-digits with a career-high 19 points.  Sophomore Erin Maxwell also scored a career-high 15 points and blocked five shots off the TWU bench while sophomore Emily Spector added 11 points for the Pioneers.  Salazar and TWU freshman Morgan Easley each shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.  Easley finished with nine points off the bench.  Other TWU standouts were senior Ria Pateraki with a game-high eight rebounds and sophomore Kenesha Saygo with seven points, seven rebounds and a game-high six assists.

The Pioneers held Adams State to just three field goals and 9.1 percent shooting in the first half.  TWU held the Grizzlies without a point until the 9:37 mark in the half.  Adams State missed their first 14 shots and 25 of their first 26 shots.  The Pioneers meanwhile shot 46.2 percent in the first 20 minutes and made all seven of their free throws.

In the second half,  TWU couldn't miss a shot as they made 71.4 percent (15-for-21) of their field goals.  The Grizzlies scored 39 of their 47 points in the second half after hitting nine three-point field goals.  The Pioneers never let their lead fall below 24 points in the half and even led by as many as 35 points.

"We played great team basketball and were able to get high-percentage shots," said TWU head coach Beth Jillson.  "We started fast by getting defensive stops and holding them scoreless in the first 10 minutes.  I am proud of the way we responded after a tough loss yesterday (to #7 Emporia State).  This is a good in-region win for us."

TWU outrebounded the Grizzlies, 43-35, while the Pioneers' bench scored 33 points.  TWU also shot 90.0 percent from the free-throw line while handing out 22 assists on 27 field goals.

The Pioneers will make their home debut when they host the 2014 Marriott Champions Circle Pioneers Premiere on Nov. 21-22.  TWU will face St. Mary's on Friday, Nov. 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena.
