CANYON, Texas (Nov. 2) – The TWU soccer came into its final regular season game needing a tie to clinch a berth in the LSC Championship Tournament but suffered a 1-0 loss to the host West Texas A&M to end their season.
The Pioneers finished the year with a 9-8-1 overall record and a 3-6-1 mark in the Lone Star Conference. The nine wins tied the school record for most wins in a season set during the 2005 and 2008 seasons.
The only goal of the game was scored early in the first half in the 13th minute. WTAMU's Jessie Thomas scored from three yards out into an open net on a rebound. Thomas' first shot was saved by TWU junior goalkeeper
Ariana Morrison but the rebound went back to Thomas who found the net.
The Pioneers created some opportunities throughout the game but could not get the equalizer.
"This is a tough loss after getting so close to a berth in the conference championpionship," said TWU head coach
Babak Abouzar. "We played well but did not execute well in the final third. We gave up a tough goal on a rebound. Ariana made a great save on the first shot. The girls need to be proud of what they did this season. We had a winning season, broke school records and beat two top-25 teams."
Seniors
Erin Bolinger,
Emily Davila,
Candice Davies and
Allison Rupp end their outstanding TWU careers after helping the Pioneers improve by four wins from 2013. The four combined to score seven goals and assist on 10 more this season.
"These four seniors were big part of our success this season," Abouzar said. "Their leadership will be missed."
