DENTON, Texas (Jan. 22) – TWU sophomore forward
Emily Spector hit a three-point shot with 11 seconds left in regulation to lead the Pioneers to a 63-61 win over Eastern New Mexico on Thursday night in Kitty Magee Arena. With the win, TWU improved to 12-6 on the season and 5-2 in the Lone Star Conference.
Spector recorded her third double-double of the season with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore
Kenesha Saygo came off the Pioneers' bench and added 16 points, five rebounds and four assists while sophomore
Erin Maxwell posted eight points and six rebounds for TWU.
The Zias started the game on a 7-0 run but TWU regrouped and scored 14 of the next 21 points to tie the score. With the scored knotted at 22-22 at 4:23 mark in the first half, the Pioneers went on a 14-3 run to take an 11-point lead. Eastern New Mexico hit a three at the buzzer to make it a 36-28 game at the break.
In the second half, TWU maintained the lead and was up 50-40 at 9:58 mark before the Zias made a run. ENMU used a 14-0 run to go on top 54-50 with 4:39 left in the game. The Pioneers responded with four straight points to tie the score and took a 60-56 lead with a 10-6 run. The Zias again scored five straight to take a one-point lead with 17 seconds left on the clock. Spector nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the key in the final seconds to give the Pioneers a two-point lead and the win.
"I am really proud of the way our players stepped up in a clutch situation and finished the game," said TWU head coach
Beth Jillson. "They kept their poise and came up with a big conference win. We didn't shoot the ball as well as we have liked to but we outrebounded them with 14 offensive rebounds. Spector played a good game shooting 3-for-4 from the three including the clutch three at the end."
The Pioneers outrebounded ENMU, 38-26, and handed out 14 assists on 22 field goals. TWU also recorded seven steals and hit 7 of 22 shots from three-point range.
The Pioneers will return to action when they travel to Canyon, TX, to face #10 West Texas A&M on Sunday, Jan. 25. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the First United Bank Center.
