DENTON, Texas (Oct. 20) – The TWU volleyball team tied the season-high with nine service aces and bounced back from a two-game skid with a 3-0 win against Southeastern Oklahoma State Tuesday night in Kitty Magee Arena.
The Pioneers posted a .330 hitting percentage and recorded eight team blocks in a 25-9, 25-12, and 25-18 win. TWU was led by sophomore
Baylie Barnes and senior
Hillary Shaffer with eight kills each while sophomore
Briley Cole and junior
Sara Oxford added seven each. Sophomore
Mary Kate Clark posted 16 assists and junior
Mallory Kuechle had 10 digs. Kuechle also had a game-high four service aces.
In set one TWU used a pair of 6-0 runs to capture a 16-point win. The Pioneers recorded six of their nine service aces in the opening set and posted a .321 hitting percentage.
In the second set TWU started with a 7-1 run and later closed out the set on a 6-0 run. The Pioneers posted a .394 hitting percentage with zero hitting errors.
In the third set the Savage Strom built a 13-11 lead before TWU went on an 8-0 to go on top by six points. The Pioneers outscored SOSU 6-5 in the final 11 points to close out the game.
"We bounced back with a good win," said TWU head coach
Shelly Barberee. "Every player in uniform had an opportunity to play and we were able to rest couple of key players. We used three setters in this game and they ran the offense very well. We hit the ball well with very few mistakes."
The Pioneers are 16-5 on the season and will continue their homestand against West Texas A&M on Friday, Oct. 23. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena.
