DENTON, Texas (Oct. 24) –The TWU soccer team overcame a halftime deficit, wind, mist, cold and sloppy field conditions to defeat visiting Eastern New Mexico, 2-1, Saturday at TWU Soccer Field. The Pioneers improved to 8-5-2 on the season and 3-3-1 in the Lone Star Conference.
After watching Friday's game get washed out, both teams took the field Saturday evening. Both teams traded shots early in the first half before ENMU's Danielle Caro put the Greyhounds on top in 23rd minute. She found a loose ball and scored on a hard shot from the top of the box.
The Pioneers regrouped at the break and tied the game in 69th minute on junior
Nancy Chavez's fourth goal of the season. She took a cross inside the box from sophomore
Chelsea Martin and found the back of the net.
TWU continued to put pressure with six straight shots. The Pioneers took the lead on sophomore
Megan Coppedge's second goal of the season in the 82nd minute. Freshman
Ashley Bishop took a rebound and found Coppedge for the goal.
"We didn't want to get dirty in the first half but picked it up in the second half and played better," said TWU head coach
Babak Abouzar. "We had to make some changes in the backfield and the players that got a chance to play did a good job.
Pressley Bailey and
Emily Russell played very well on defense. In the second half we won the physical 50-50 battle and it changed the outcome of the game."
TWU outshot the Greyhounds 12-6 in the second and 18-11 in the game. The Pioneers also had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Pioneers game against West Texas A&M has been moved to 7:00 p.m. start on Sunday, Oct. 25. The game was originally scheduled for 2:00 p.m. start. Free Youth Clinic has been cancelled.
