LAWTON, Okla. (Oct. 3) – The Pioneers handed the host Cameron its first loss of the season in four sets, 25-19, 20-25, 25-19, and 25-20, Saturday afternoon in Aggie Gym. With the win TWU improved to 12-3 on the season and 5-1 in the Lone Star Conference.
Senior
Hillary Shaffer and juniors
Mallory Kuechle and
Sara Oxford all had 12 kills each and hit over .333. Kuechle led the Pioneers with a .414 hitting percentage and recorded 14 digs on defense for the double-double. She also had four total blocks and did not have any hitting errors. Sophomore
Briley Cole also added seven kills.
Freshman
Makayla Mayfield led the team with 16 digs while seniors
Joey Redwine and
Torie Talkington added 12 digs each. Redwine also had a game-high 43 assists.
After splitting the first six points in the first set, the Pioneers used a 7-1 run to build a six-point lead, 10-4. TWU maintained at least a three-point lead the rest of the way before winning the set by six points.
In the second set both teams went back and forth through the first 20 points. With the score tied at 10-10, Cameron went on an 8-3 run. The Aggies managed to keep the comfortable lead before capturing the set by five.
Both teams again traded points early in the third set. With the score knotted at 11-11, the Pioneers scored four straight points to take a 15-11 lead. Cameron managed to cut the deficit to two points, 18-16, but TWU responded by closing out the set on a 7-3 run.
In the fourth set the Aggies jumped out to an early 11-6 lead. TWU regrouped and used a 6-1 run to even the score at 12-12. After six ties and three lead changes, the Pioneers took a 21-19 lead on three straight kills. TWU put the game away with a 4-1 run to hand the Aggies their first loss.
"We picked up another big conference win on the road," said TWU head coach
Shelly Barberee. "There are currently four teams with one conference loss and we are currently at top of the LSC standings with a 5-1 record. Every win is important and we picked two big wins this weekend. Again we passed the ball and ran the offense very well. We have lot of weapons on offense and distributed the ball to all of them."
The Pioneers also had six service aces led by Redwine with four and 7.5 team blocks led by Kuechle and Shaffer with four each.
TWU will return home to host a non-conference game on Wednesday, Oct. 7 against St. Mary's. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena.
