TWU Soccer Makes History in Overtime Win at Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Nov. 1) – The TWU soccer team picked up its 10th win of the season breaking the school record for most wins in a season with a 2-1 overtime victory at Midwestern State.  The Pioneers are now 10-6-2 on the season and 5-4-1 in the Lone Star Conference.

TWU broke the old mark (9 wins) set during the 2005, 2008 and 2014 seasons.  With 5-4-1 LSC record, the Pioneers also finished third in the conference standings and tied the school record for the best finish.  The 2009 team also finished third in the standings while the 2007 team tied for third.

"I am proud of the girls," said TWU head coach Babak Abouzar.  "It's a great accomplishment and their hard work and dedication this season paid off."

In the first half both teams got off six shots each but neither team was able to find the back of the net.  MSU outshot the Pioneers, 4-1, in shot on goal but TWU's goalie Ariana Morrison stopped all four shots to keep the game scoreless at the half.

In the second half it was the Pioneers that struck first.  Senior Natalia Diaz recorded her seventh goal of the season in the 56th minute off a corner kick to give TWU a 1-0 lead.  She took the corner kick and scored directly through the keeper's hands.

The Mustangs tied the game in the 74th minute on Ashley Cottrell's first goal of the season.  She took a pass from Kayla Cheesman in the middle of the box and found the net to tie the score at 1-1.  Both teams had few opportunities to end the game in regulation but could not find the net.

The Pioneers ended the game in the first overtime with a goal at 96:58 mark off a free kick.  Diaz took the free kick and the Mustang's defense cleared the ball.  Sophomore Rachel Peters collected the ball and found sophomore Megan Coppedge inside the box.  Coppedge scored her third goal of the season to end the game.

"We were both fighting for the third spot in the standings," Abouzar said.  "Natalia put us on top with a great goal off a corner kick but Midwestern State sent more people up front and tied the game.  We regrouped in the overtime and executed on a free kick.  Megan had a good shot at the PK mark and she ended the game."

Morrison finished the game with seven saves in the net while junior Nancy Chavez and sophomore Chelsea Martin had four shots each.

The Pioneers will now advance to the 2015 Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament on Nov. 5, 6 and 8.  It's the fifth postseason appearance for TWU in the program history.
