DENTON, Texas (Nov. 7) – In their final regular-season home game of this memorable 2015 season, the Pioneers swept visiting Midwestern State, 25-21, 25-15, and 25-22. With the win TWU improved to 22-6 on the season and 11-4 in the Lone Star Conference.
After honoring their five departing players,
Mallory Kuechle,
Brittany Land,
Joey Redwine,
Hillary Shaffer and
Torie Talkington, the Pioneers posted a .248 hitting percentage in a quick three-set match.
Junior
Sara Oxford dominated the game with 15 kills on 24 attempts for a .625 hitting percentage. She also had 14 digs and five blocks. Sophomore
Briley Cole added seven kills while Kuechle, Redwine and Shaffer added five kills each. Kuechle also had 10 digs and Redwine posted 32 assists and 13 digs. Talkington finished with eight digs while sophomore
Baylie Barnes came off the bench and added 10 digs.
In the first set the Pioneers fell behind early and trailed most of the set. Down, 21-18, TWU scored seven straight to capture the set by four points.
In the second the Pioneers again trailed early but a 9-0 run put TWU ahead 16-10. The Pioneers used another 9-2 run to take the set by 10 points.
In the third set, Midwestern State led 9-4 before TWU went on a 6-1 run to make it 10-10. With the score knotted at 17-17, the Pioneers scored five straight to pull away before winning the set by three points.
"It's a good win on Senior Day and every player in uniform got the opportunity to play," said TWU head coach
Shelly Barberee. "We had too many hitting errors in the first set but we settled down and played better in the second and third. Sara had another great game offensively."
The Pioneers will return to action when they close out the regular season on the road at Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday, Nov. 13. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in Commerce, TX.
