Erin Maxwell had a career night for the second straight game as the Pioneers captured their sixth straight victory with a 61-41 win over Wayland Baptist Tuesday night. TWU is now 8-2 on the season.
Maxwell led all players with a career-high 21 points on 10-for-16 shooting. She also cleared a team-best seven rebounds and blocked three shots. Junior
Deja Pointer came off the bench and added eight points while sophomore
Alexis Nezianya finished with six points and five rebounds.
The Pioneers scored the first four points of the game and led 14-11 with under two minutes to go in the first quarter. TWU closed out the quarter with an 8-0 run to take a 22-11 lead.
In the second quarter the Pioneers led by as many as 19 points before taking a 38-20 halftime lead. TWU shot 51.6 percent in the first half while holding the Flying Queens to just 27.3 percent.
In the third quarter Wayland Baptist chipped away and outscored the Pioneers 14-8 to cut the deficit to 12 points, 46-34. TWU struggled offensively and made just 26.7 percent of its shots. The Pioneers regrouped in the fourth quarter and went on a 13-5 run to push the lead to 20 points, 59-39, at 3:53 mark.
"Erin played a great game and got us going offensively," said TWU head coach
Beth Jillson. "We shot the ball well in the first two quarters but struggled a little in the third. Overall we played well on both ends and I am very happy with our assist total."
The Pioneers outrebounded WBU, 42-40 and outscored the Flying Queens, 46-18, in the paint. TWU also handed out 17 assists on 27 field goals.
The Pioneers will continue their homestand and will host Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday, Dec. 19. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena.
