Records fall in Pioneers’ win against LeMoyne-Owen

DENTON, Texas (Dec. 20) – The TWU basketball team set two new school records and tied another in an 83-42 win over visiting LeMoyne-Owen Sunday afternoon in Kitty Magee Arena.

With the win the Pioneers improved to 10-2 record on the season and are off to a best start in TWU basketball history.  The Pioneers also posted their eighth straight win breaking the record set by the 1975-76 and 2013-14 teams with seven.  TWU recorded 13 blocks against LeMoyne-Owen to tie the school record set on Nov. 20, 1987 against Angelo State.

Junior Erin Maxwell dominated the game and led all players with 14 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocks.  She set a new career-high in blocks and tied her career-high in rebounds.  Maxwell also came one block shy of tying TWU's single-game record set by Peggy Allen during the 1990-91 season.

All 16 players on the team appeared in the game and recorded either a point, rebound or an assist.  Sophomore Morgan Easley also reached double digits in the points with 12 while four other players posted seven or more points.  Junior Emily Spector came off the bench and recorded nine points and seven rebounds while senior Danielle Westerfield added eight points.  Sophomore Kayla Beattie and freshman Desiree Phipps both posted career highs with seven points each.

The Magicians scored the game's first two points before TWU went on a 15-0 run and never looked back.  The Pioneers held LOC to just 20.0 percent shooting, including 0-for-10 from the three-point range.  TWU outrebounded the Magicians, 53-48, and outscored LOC, 44-22, in the paint.

"I am very proud of the team for the best start in program history," said TWU head coach Beth Jillson.  "After losing the two games early this season we put together a nice win streak with some big wins.  We closed out our non-conference schedule on a high note and it was nice to have everyone play in today's game.  We will have a little break for the holidays and we will get back to work after Christmas to open the conference schedule at home on Dec. 31st."

The Pioneers will return to action on New Year's Eve when they host Tarleton State in the Lone Star Conference opener.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena.
