DENTON, Texas (Feb.) – TWU junior forward
Danielle Westerfield came off the bench and recorded 12 points and nine rebounds to lead the Pioneers to a 55-39 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday night at Kitty Magee Arena.
With the win, TWU snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 13-10 on the season and 6-6 in the Lone Star Conference.
Westerfield cleared five of her nine rebounds on the offensive end and also handed out three assists. TWU sophomore guard
Kenesha Saygo scored a game-high 15 points while sophomore forward
Emily Spector recorded eight points and eight rebounds for the Pioneers.
"Dani played a great game and was a force off the bench," said TWU head coach
Beth Jillson. "She was aggressive and really got us going offensively. She also did a great job on defense."
The Javelinas scored the first two points of the game on a jumper before TWU went on an 11-0 run to take a nine-point lead. Leading by four points, 17-13, with 4:22 left in the first half, the Pioneers outscored TAMUK, 7-3, to take a 24-16 halftime lead. Both teams struggled on offense in the first 20 minutes, shooting under 30 percent.
In the second half, the Javelinas cut their deficit to three points, 30-27, at 14:50 mark but TWU scored the next eight points to push the lead back to double digits. The Pioneers extended their lead to 18 points with 2:36 left before capturing a 16-point win.
TWU outrebounded the Javelinas, 49-25, with 26 coming on offensive end. The Pioneers also recorded 22 second-chance points. TWU's bench led by Westerfield, sophomore
Taylor Nolan and freshman
Jayzhia Softly, outscored the Javelinas' bench, 20-6.
"We did a great job rebounding the ball," Jillson said. "We have been struggling on the boards the last four games so it was good to dominate the boards like we did tonight. Dani, Jayzhia and Taylor were a spark off the bench and brought lot of energy."
The Pioneers will return to action when they travel to San Angelo, TX, to face Angelo State on Saturday, Feb. 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Junell Center.
"We have four games left in the regular season and we want finish strong," said Jillson. "We want to take it one game at a time, play our best, and peak at the right time."
