DENTON, Texas (Sept. 25) – TWU sophomore right side hitter
Briley Cole posted a career-high in kills to help the Pioneers to a sweep against visiting Texas A&M-Kingsville, 25-20, 25-16, and 25-18. TWU improved to 9-3 on the season and 3-1 in the Lone Star Conference.
Cole, one of three Pioneers with double digit kills, posted 10 on 19 swings for a .421 hitting percentage. Senior
Hillary Shaffer led all players with 13 on 27 swings for a .444 hitting percentage while freshman
Makayla Mayfield recorded 10 kills and 12 digs for a double-double. Junior
Sara Oxford also added 12 digs and game-high five blocks and senior
Joey Redwine had 37 assists.
In the first set TWU jumped out to a 9-2 lead and posted a .350 hitting percentage for a five-point win. In the second the Pioneers again jumped out to a 7-3 lead and pushed the lead to 10 points, 21-11, with an 8-1 run. TWU captured a nine-point win after holding the Javelinas to .000 hitting percentage. In the third set the Pioneers fell behind 7-3 but scored five straight points to go on top. Leading 19-18, TWU closed out the game with a 6-0 run.
"We served really well and our passing was much better than Tuesday," said TWU head coach
Shelly Barberee. "Briley had a chance to start today and she played great. I am proud of the team for bouncing back after a tough loss on Tuesday."
The Pioneers will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 26 when they host a non-conference game against East Central. First serve is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena.
