TWU Soccer Falls to #7 Angelo State, 2-0

DENTON, Texas (Sept. 27) – The TWU soccer team fell to vising #7 Angelo State, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at TWU Soccer Field.  With the result the Pioneers dropped to 5-3-1 on the season and 1-1-0 in the Lone Star Conference.

The Pioneers' defense rose to the occasion against the nationally ranked ASU in the first half and shutdown the high-powered offense.  The Rambelles couldn't get off a shot in the first 45 minutes while TWU took five including one on goal

Angelo State regrouped at the break and outshot the Pioneers 15-8 in the second half including 7-4 in shots on goal.

The Rambelles got on the scoreboard in the 62nd minute when Haley Mendel took a rebound off TWU's defender just inside the box and shot to lower left of the net.  ASU made it 2-0 in the 70th minute on a breakaway goal.  Sierra Anderson took a pass from Tiffany Dang and beat the goalie one-one-one.

The Pioneers did not go away as they put pressure on Angelo State in the final 20 minutes.  TWU controlled the ball for most of the time and got off six shots including three on goal but could not find the back of the net.

The Pioneers were led by senior Natalia Diaz and junior Rachel Peters with three shots each.  Senior goalkeeper Ariana Morrison played all 90 minutes in the net and made five saves.

"We came out and played really well in the first half," said TWU head coach Babak Abouzar.  "We talked to the girls at halftime and fine tune couple of things but they came out with no intensity.  We have to play every game and the entire game like our season depends on it."

The Pioneers will continue their homestand and will host Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday, Oct. 1.  The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at TWU Soccer Field.
