DENTON, Texas (Sept. 5) – The TWU volleyball team split on the second at the 2015 Hilton Garden Inn Classic. The Pioneers swept Arkansas Tech, 25-20, 25-23 and 25-19 before falling to UC-Colorado Springs, 21-25, 25-27 and 16-25.
In the first game against Arkansas Tech, senior
Hillary Shaffer led the Pioneers with a game-high 14 kills and a .522 hitting percentage. Junior
Mallory Kuechle added seven kills and a team-high 13 digs while freshman
Makayla Mayfield chipped in eight kills and seven digs. Junior
Joey Redwine finished with 30 assists and seven digs.
TWU dominated the first two sets and posted over .300 hitting percentage as a team. The Pioneers finished game with a.298 hitting percentage while holding the Golden Sun to .109.
In the final game against UC-Colorado Springs, Mayfield led the Pioneers with 12 kills and a .308 hitting percentage. Junior
Sara Oxford added seven kills and 12 digs while senior
Torie Talkington led the team with 17 digs. Kuechle also had 15 digs and Redwine added 24 assists and 11 digs.
"We played really well in the first game with a good hitting percentage," said TWU head coach
Shelly Barberee. "Hillary had a nice game offensively. Against Colorado Springs the first two sets were close but we struggled in the third. We had a chance in the second set but let it slip away at the end. Makayla had a great day and a great tournament overall."
Mayfield finished the day with 20 kills on 63 attempts and 0 errors for a .317 hitting percentage. She also had 16 digs.
Mayfield and Shaffer were named to the All-Tournament team along with Carolina Gasparini (Arkansas at Monticello), Hunter Eshnaur (Arkansas Tech), Eat Evans (Cameron), Jordan Williams (Cameron), Molly Howard (Harding), Layne Little (A&M-Commerce), Ramey Gardner (Texas A&M-International) and Kim Catlett (UC-Colorado Springs).
The Pioneers will return to action when they travel to Colorado to play in the Steel & Silver Classic on Sept. 11-12.
