STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Jan. 17) – TWU freshman Kara Mitchell scored a career-high 18 points and the Pioneers used an 8-0 run in the final two minutes to capture a 61-58 win at Tarleton State Sunday afternoon.  With the win the Pioneers improved to 15-3 on the season and 5-1 in the Lone Star Conference.

Mitchell led all players with 18 points on 4-for-9 shooting from the floor and 10-for-18 from the free-throw line.  Junior Kenesha Saygo added 14 points and seven rebounds while junior Erin Maxwell finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.  Sophomore Alexis Nezianya led the game with 10 rebounds and junior Deja Pointer came off the bench and scored seven points.

The Pioneers trailed by as many as 17 points in the second quarter and 16 points towards the end of third quarter.  TWU used an 18-3 run to get back into the game before closing out on an 8-0 run for the win.

Tarleton State jumped out to a 10-4 lead halfway through the first quarter and led 17-12 at the end of the quarter.  The TexAnns used a 15-3 run to start the second quarter to take a 32-15 lead.  TWU used an 8-0 run in the final three minutes to cut the deficit to single digits, 34-25, at the break.

Tarleton State started the third quarter with back-to-back threes to push the lead back to 15 points.  Trailing by 16 points, the Pioneers once again rallied and used another 8-0 run to make it an eight-point game, 51-43, at the end of third.

TWU continued its run in the fourth and outscored the TexAnns, 8-2, to make it 53-51 with 5:03 left on the clock.  TSU pushed the lead back to six and led 58-53 at 2:02 mark before the Pioneers used their final run for the victory.

"I am proud of our resiliency to comeback and chip away after being down by 17 points," said TWU head coach Beth Jillson.  "We never game up and battled for 40 minutes.  Our defense was great in the second half and shot the ball better offensively."

TWU shot 41.7 percent in the second half while holding the TexAnns to just 25.9 percent.  The Pioneers finished with a 38.8 shooting percentage for the game.

The Pioneers will return to action when they host Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday, Jan. 21.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena.
