PALM BAY, Fla. (Jan. 30) –The TWU softball team split on the second day at the Florida Tech/Marriott Kickoff Classic. The Pioneers fell to Flagler 10-5 before bouncing back with a 6-3 win against Palm Beach Atlantic.
In game one Flagler jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first and made it 4-0 in the third with a solo home run. The Pioneers got one back in the bottom of the third on a RBI ground out by senior
Tealey Farquhar.
TWU made it 4-2 in the fourth on a two-out RBI double by sophomore
Amanda Gray. The Pioneers then evened the score with two unearned runs in fifth. Sophomore
Sydney Hester and Farquhar both recorded RBI singles in the inning.
The Saints responded in the top of the sixth and scored six unearned runs to take a 10-4 lead. Flagler sent 12 batters to the plate while the Pioneers committed three errors in the inning. TWU scored its fifth run in the bottom of the sixth.
Against Palm Beach Atlantic TWU took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Farquhar started the game with a double and later came around to score on an error to put the Pioneers on top. TWU made it 2-0 in the top of the fourth on a RBI single by Farquhar.
The Sailfish evened the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth. PBA scored the two runs on a walk, triple and a fielder's choice. The Sailfish added a run in the bottom of fifth to take a 3-2 lead.
The Pioneers regained the lead in the top of the sixth with four unearned runs. TWU scored all four runs with two outs including a two-RBI single by junior
Nicole Nordie.
Farquhar finished the day batting 4-for-8 with two runs and three RBI while Hester went 3-for-5 with two runs. Nordie batted 3-for-7 with two RBI. Junior
Tori Bice took the loss in the first game and then came in relief in the second to pick up the win.
"Our offense was much better today and we got some key hits when we needed them," said TWU head coach
Genny Stidham. "We took advantage of the mistakes that the other teams made and scored some runs. Unfortunately we made mistakes on defense in the first game against Flagler and it cost us the game."
The Pioneers will conclude their trip to Florida with a single game on Sunday, Jan. 31. TWU will face Florida Tech for the second time this weekend at 12:00 p.m. (CST).
