Spector leads Pioneers to 64-58 road win at Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Jan. 31) – TWU junior Emily Spector came off the bench and scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Pioneers to a 64-58 win at Midwestern State.  TWU is now 17-5 on the season and 7-3 in the Lone Star Conference.

Spector led three players in double figures while sophomore Alexis Nezianya recorded her second straight double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.  Junior Kenesha Saygo added 13 points and eight rebounds while junior Deja Pointer and sophomore Cienna Rodriguez chipped in seven points each.

The Pioneers started the game slow as they fell behind 10-3 early in the game.  TWU regrouped and outscored the Mustangs, 15-0, in the final six minutes of the first quarter to take an 18-10 lead.

The Pioneers pushed the lead to double digits, 26-16, halfway through the second quarter.  MSU used a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to three points but TWU outscored the Mustangs 7-2 in the final three minutes to take a 33-25 lead at the break.

Both teams traded points throughout the third quarter and the Pioneers maintained at least a six-point lead.  TWU led by as many as 13 points in the quarter but took a 46-38 lead at the end of the third.  The Mustangs scored the final five points of the quarter.

In the fourth the Pioneers pushed the lead to 11 points, 52-41, at 7:12 mark but MSU went on a 9-2 run to make it a four-point game.  The Mustangs got within two points in the final minute but Rodriguez sealed the win with four straight free throws.

"Our defense was very good today and we got back to guarding the way we know how," said TWU head coach Beth Jillson.  "Our post players did a good job of attacking gaps and working together on offense."

The Pioneers will close out their four-game road stretch at Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday, Feb. 4.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
