Seniors, Pioneers finish regular season slate

DENTON, Texas (Oct. 30, 2016) – Texas Woman's University was unable to secure a score against UT Permian Basin in a 1-0 loss during the final regular season game for the Pioneers Sunday afternoon on TWU Soccer Field.

TWU (9-8-1, 5-7-0 LSC) outshot the Falcons (2-13-1, 2-10-0 LSC) 12-to-5, however UTPB recorded five shots on goals compared to three by the Pioneers. The Falcons totaled four corner kicks to three from TWU, and Samantha Jimenez registered four saves while the Falcons had three.

The contest was the finale for the five Pioneer seniors - Alisa Velasquez, Nancy Chavez, Rachel Peters, Gaby Larson and Bobbie Gutierrez – who were honored in a pregame ceremony.

UTPB's Deonna Calhoun connected for the first and only goal of the game in the 56th minute after stealing the ball from a TWU defender and sending the ball into the right corner of the net.

Within 15 seconds in the 79th minute, Gutierrez and Cara Zwilling each attempted to tie the game but both shots were blocked by the Falcons. Aryana Maricle-Conroy fired an attempt five minutes later but the shot sailed wide, and Lucero Chavez had a look with less than four minutes remaining but UTPB's goalkeeper made the save. A final shot by Larson with 21 seconds on the clock went wide to conclude the match.

The Pioneers begin Lone Star Conference tournament play on Thursday at high-seed Texas A&M-Commerce. Fifth-seed TWU will face No. 4 Angelo State at 7:30 p.m. on Lion Soccer Field.
