SILVER CITY, N.M. (Oct. 7, 2016) – A striking offensive performance by Western New Mexico was difficult for Texas Woman's University to contain in a 3-0 sweep of the Pioneers Friday night on Drag's Court.
The Mustangs (12-6, 4-3 LSC) fired a .345 hitting percentage on the evening, the second-highest mark against the Pioneers (6-10, 2-5 LSC) this season. Meanwhile, TWU was only successful on .080 of its attacks in the three set loss (25-17, 25-19, 25-19).
Sara Oxford was the TWU team leader in kills with 12.
WNMU jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first set before
Kerstin Jenkins provided a block and kill, Oxford delivered a kill and
Jade Akins served up an ace to close the gap to 10-8. The Mustangs stretched their lead to 21-15 before closing out the first set.
A kill by
Anna McGee in set two knotted the game at 5-5 before WNMU tallied a 5-0 that included three straight service aces. Another McGee and a pair of Mustang attack errors cut the lead to 16-14. An Oxford kill kept things close at 21-18, but WNMU ended the set on a 4-1 run.
The Pioneers fell into an early 7-1 hole in set three and the margin grew to 11-3. A 15-7 Mustang lead shrunk to 16-11 due in part to back-to-back blocks by
Courtney Noel and
Caroline Noel, but WNMU extended the lead to 21-12 before closing out the Pioneers.
TWU heads across the state tomorrow for a contest at Eastern New Mexico at 7 p.m. CST.
