No. 6 Angelo State overtakes TWU, 74-53

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Dec. 3, 2016) – Texas Woman's University opened the contest against sixth-ranked Angelo State on a 9-0 run, but ASU controlled the boards in a 74-53 over the Pioneers Saturday night Stephens Arena in the Junell Center to give the Pioneers an 0-2 start in Lone Star Conference play.

ASU (6-0, 2-0 LSC) outrebounded TWU (5-3, 0-2 LSC) 50-25 and had four players in double figures while the Pioneers were led by 15 points from Kenesha Saygo. Neither team shot well from the outside, as the Belles made 4-of-18 and TWU hit 4-of-15, while ASU went 14-of-17 from the free throw line and the Pioneers made 3-of-8 attempts.

Andrea Mapua scored the first five points of the evening, and a jumper by Emily Spector put TWU up 11-3 midway through the first quarter before the Belles outscored the Pioneers 12-7 to close within 18-15.

The Belles took a 24-20 lead on a pair of free throws at the 4:27 mark of the second quarter, and Saygo connected on a jumper to cut the margin in half with three and-a-half minutes to go until the break. Three field goals along with two free throws put the Belles up 32-22 and ASU hung on to the 10-point lead heading into halftime.

Two jumpers by ASU extended the lead to 38-24 before a Mapua three brought the Pioneers to within single digits at 40-31. Leading 48-26, the Belles went on a 12-0 tear to push the lead to 60-36 two minutes into the fourth quarter and led by more than 20 points throughout the remainder of the contest.

The Pioneers play their first LSC homestand beginning Thursday against West Texas A&M at 7 p.m. followed by a Saturday matchup at 2 p.m. against UT Permian Basin.
