DENTON, Texas (Mar. 13) – The TWU softball team split the doubleheader against Midwestern State Sunday evening at Pioneers Field. TWU won the first game 6-4 before dropping a 7-6 decision in the second game.
In the game one the Pioneers scored a run in each of the second, third and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead. MSU batted around in the top of the fifth and scored four times to go on top 4-3. TWU evened the score at 4-4 with a run in the bottom of the fifth and then scored twice in the sixth to regain the lead.
Senior
Laura Mabary went 4-for-4 with three RBI including two in the sixth. Senior
Tealey Farquhar batted 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Junior
Tori Bice started in the circle and pitched six innings for the win while junior Haliey Dixon tossed the seventh for the save.
In game two the Mustangs scored a run in the top of the first but TWU responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 1-1. The Pioneers sent seven batters to the plate in the third and scored four times to take a 5-1 lead. After a scoreless fourth, MSU scored four run to even the score at 5-5. TWU regain the lead, 6-5, in the bottom of the fifth with a run. After another scoreless inning in the sixth, the Mustangs scored two runs in the top of the seventh to go on top and capture the win.
Junior
Nicole Nordie went 3-for-4 while freshman
Lindy Kennedy scored two runs.
"We were able to manufacture runs in the first game with timely hits but couldn't do it in the second," said TWU head coach
Genny Stidham. "We left lot of runners on base in the second game and it's frustrating. Most of our slappers did their job till the end. We needed to add few more runs at the end when we had the opportunity but couldn't do it."
The Pioneers will return to action when they wrap-up the four-game series with Midwestern State on Monday, Mar. 14. Both team will play a doubleheader starting at 5:00 p.m.
