Softball Drops Doubleheader against No. 1 West Texas A&M

DENTON, Texas (Apr. 22) The TWU softball team dropped both games of the doubleheader against No. 1 West Texas A&M Friday night.  The Pioneers lost the first game 9-6 in eight innings before falling 13-7 in the second.

In game one TWU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first and then took a 5-2 lead in the third.  The Lady Buffs tied the game with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth before the Pioneers regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth.  WTAMU again tied the game in sixth.  After a scoreless seventh, the Lady Buffs took the lead with three unearned runs in the eight and held on for the win.

Senior Tealey Farquhar went 2-for-3 with two runs while senior Laura Mabary was 2-for-4 with a run and a RBI.  Junior Nicole Nordie scored two runs and drove in a run.

In game two West Texas A&M scored four runs in the top of the first inning but the Pioneers got two back in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-2.  After the Lady Buffs added a run in the top of the fourth, TWU sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning and scored four runs to take a 6-5 lead.   WTAMU regained the lead with five unearned runs in the sixth and then added three more in the seventh.  The Pioneers scored their seventh run in the bottom of the sixth.

Junior Logan Polasek led the team going 3-for-4 with two RBI while sophomore Alexis Elizondo drove in two runs.  Farquhar drew three walks in the game to tie TWU's single-game school record.

"We fought hard in both games and stayed with them till the end," said TWU head coach Genny Stidham.  "We had couple of errors at the wrong time and they cost us the games.  We gave up three unearned runs in the eighth inning of game one and gave up five unearned runs in the sixth inning of game two.  That was the difference.  We need to regroup and come back ready to play on Saturday."

The Pioneers will return to action when they wrap-up the regular season and four-game series against West Texas A&M on Saturday, Apr. 23.  The doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
