Softball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader with Oklahoma Christian

DENTON, Texas (Apr. 5) The TWU softball team split the non-conference doubleheader against visiting Oklahoma Christian Tuesday evening at Pioneer Field.  After dropping the first game 10-0, the Pioneers bounced back with a 4-1 win in the second.

In game one the Pioneers' offense struggled as they managed just two hits.  TWU had seven base runners in the game on two errors, two walks, two hits and a hit-by-pitch but could not manufacture any runs.  The two hits came off the bats of freshman Lindy Kennedy in the second and junior Nicole Nordie in the sixth.

After a scoreless first inning, OCU batted around in the second and scored four runs.  The Eagles then added a run in the fifth and a run in the sixth before scoring four more in the seventh.

In game two junior Hailey Dixon started in the circle and limited OCU to just one run.  She struck out four batters for her eighth win of the season.

Senior Laura Mabary started the bottom of the second inning with triple to right center and scored on a single by Kennedy to put TWU on top 1-0.  The Pioneers added a run in the third on sacrifice fly by Nordie.  The Eagles scored a run in the fourth to make it 2-1 but TWU added two more in the sixth to push the lead to 4-1.  Sophomore Amanda Gray drove in the first run scoring junior Logan Polasek, who led off the inning with a walk.  Nordie later scored the second run on double steal attempt.

"Our offensive struggles carried over from the weekend into game one," said TWU head coach Genny Stidham.  "It was a poor performance all around.  We didn't pitch well, our defense committed errors and offensively we couldn't get the ball out of the infield.  Hailey pitched well in the second game and we were able to give her some run support.  We can't continue to play like this this weekend.  We need to regroup and get back to playing like we did in March."

The Pioneers are 25-15 on the season and will return to action when they host a four-game series against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday-Saturday, Apr. 8-9.  The doubleheader on Friday is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
