Pioneers drop conference opener to No. 8 Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Sept. 16, 2016) - Texas Woman's University volleyball entered Lone Star Conference play at eighth-ranked Angelo State Friday in Stephens Arena at the Junell Center and fell in straight sets to the Belles by scores of 25-12, 25-16 and 25-18.

ASU (10-1, 1-0 LSC) produced a .310 hitting percentage on the night compared to .056 from TWU (3-6, 0-1 LSC) and served 10 aces at the Pioneers. Sara Oxford and Makayla Mayfield tallied team-highs in kills with six each while Oxford, Briley Cole and Anna McGee performed well defensively at the net with each registering three blocks.

A kill by McGee in set one pulled TWU to within 8-5, but the Belles pieced together a 5-0 run to pull ahead 13-5 before a block by Cole and McGee ended the skid. Back-to-back kills by Cole and Mayfield slimmed the deficit to 14-8 before ASU completed the set with a 14-8 run.

Mayfield gave TWU its first lead of the evening on an opening kill in set two before the Belles responded with four straight points. A kill by Oxford kept the Pioneers close at 7-4 before the Belles went off with eight consecutive points to jump ahead at 15-3. A block by Oxford and Katy Ranes ended the run, but TWU was unable to pull any closer than eight points throughout the remainder of the set.

Kills by Mayfield, Haley Collins and Oxford along with a block by Collins and Oxford brought the Pioneers to within 6-5 in set three after trailing 6-1. Oxford, McGee and Collins each recorded kills for a one-point game before TWU fell behind at 15-11. The Pioneers came back to knot the set at 15-all, but ASU countered with a string of kills of their own to pull ahead 20-16. McGee then added a kill and Cole contributed another for a 22-18 Pioneer deficit, but the Belles wrapped up the match on a trio of kills.

The Pioneers are back into action quickly with a match at Tarleton State tomorrow at noon.
