Overtime goal trips up No. 15 Pioneers

DENTON, Texas (Sept. 16, 2016) – A golden goal in overtime by Oklahoma Baptist University's Abigail Hicks sunk No. 15 Texas Woman's University 1-0 to hand the Pioneers their first defeat on the season and ended a four-game win streak Friday night at TWU Soccer Field.

A free kick by OBU (2-1) in the 97th minute began a hectic play in the box as Samantha Jimenez was able to punch out a Lady Bison attempt before the ball ricocheted off of members from both teams and found its way to the feet of Hicks who tapped it in for the win.

OBU's goal is just the second allowed by the Pioneers (4-1) this season and quelled Jimenez's string of shutouts at two. Tonight's absence of TWU goals marks the first time this season the Pioneers have been shutout.

The Lady Bison totaled one more shot (14-to-13) than TWU and tallied two more shots on goal (5-to-3), while Jimenez captured four saves compared to three by OBU. Chelsea Martin attempted four shots, two of which were on goal, and Lucero Chavez was the only other Pioneer to register a shot on goal.

Hicks took her first shot at Jimenez during the 37th minute but was unsuccessful as Jimenez sprawled out to make the save with her body. On the other end of the field, Chavez took her turn at the goalkeeper but the ball bounced awry of the goal.

Jimenez made another clutch save in the 69th minute as she stretched out far enough to have the ball skim off of her hands, and TWU's final attempt in regulation was on a header shot by Chelsea Martin but was saved by OBU's goalie.

Lily Holwerda fired a try wide right two minutes into overtime, and OBU sent an attempt left two minutes later. A shot by OBU in the 96th minute nailed the corner of the posts and Jimenez got a hand on it to keep the Pioneers alive, but Hicks placed her shot in the goal less than two minutes later for the Lady Bison victory.

The Pioneers begin Lone Star Conference play next Friday at home against West Texas A&M at 7 p.m. at TWU Soccer Field.
