Chavez, Bradford tally goals in win over Regis

DENVER, Colo. (Sept. 3, 2016) – Goals by Nancy Chavez and Lauren Bradford guided Texas Woman's University to a 2-1 win over Regis Saturday afternoon at Regis Match Pitch, allowing the Pioneers to open the season at 2-0 and escape Colorado with two wins this week over regional opponents within the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference following the 2-0 defeat of Colorado State-Pueblo on Thursday.

Against the Rangers, Chelsea Martin and Brittany Jones attempted shots within the first 10 minutes of the contest but were both denied by RU goalkeeper Kat Crump. Regis reeled off a trio of shots within 30 seconds, two of which were saved by Samantha Jimenez in the 18th minute. TWU was then whistled for a handball in the box allowing the Rangers a penalty kick by Sade Akindele which proved fruitful for a 1-0 RU edge.

RU had an opportunity to score on a breakaway, but Jimenez came through with a nifty save shortly thereafter. Chavez subbed in during the 19th minute and went to work minutes later by knotting the game at 1-1. A cross from Hannah Schneider to Lucero Chavez was narrowly saved by Crump and two shots sailed wide for the Pioneers in the few remaining minutes for a 1-1 halftime score.

The Rangers were able to get off several shots to begin the second half while an attempt by Maddi Nolton was blocked to prevent another score. During the 59th minute, Bradford saw her first action on the season and knocked in a goal and an assist from Rachel Peters for a 2-1 TWU advantage.

Jones and Gaby Larson registered shots with 10 minutes left on the clock but were blocked, and Regis tallied to attempts with four minutes remaining but were blocked and stopped by Jimenez. RU's final shot in the 87th minute was also denied to offer TWU the 2-1 victory.

The Pioneers host their home opener Saturday with a 7 p.m. game versus Dallas Baptist at the TWU Soccer Field.
