Soccer puts up strong first half against No. 24 MSU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Oct. 15, 2017)- Texas Woman's University held a one-goal lead over 24th-ranked Midwestern State at halftime on goals from Allie Chapman and Chelsea Martin, but MSU scored twice in the second period to hand the Pioneers a 3-2 loss Sunday afternoon at Stang Park.

The Pioneers (4-7-3, 1-5-2 LSC) limited the Mustangs (10-3-1, 5-2-1 LSC) to just three shots in the first half while TWU totaled eight in the first 45 minutes. MSU became more offensive in the after halftime and registered seven shots compared to five by the Pioneers.

Haley Ward sent a cross into the box towards Chapman in the sixth minute for the first goal of the afternoon to put the Pioneers up 1-0. Twenty-two seconds later, MSU's Destinee Williamson took a cross into the left side of the box to even the score.

In the 25th minute, Martin fired a goal into the top right corner to put TWU up 2-1, and the Pioneers took the advantage into halftime.

Less than two minutes into the second half, Julia Orozco of MSU tied the contest at 2-all by taking a pass into the middle of the box from six yards out and scoring. Mustang Kelly Cannistra connected on a goal from the right side of the box to give MSU its first lead of the contest, and the Mustangs held on for the victory.

Head Coach Babak Abouzar said, "We had a great first half. Haley played a great ball that Allie got on the end of for a great finish, and Chelsea had a great individual effort with a great shot on goal. In the second half we didn't show up. If we can fix that mindset and put two quality halves together we will be a tough team to beat."

The Pioneers host Eastern New Mexico Friday at 7 p.m.
