TWU defeated by Javelinas, 3-1

DENTON, Texas (Oct. 27, 2017) - Makayla Mayfield registered a season-high 15 kills and added 10 digs for her sixth double-double of the season in a 3-1 loss (25-21, 12-25, 23-25, 16-25) to Texas A&M-Kingsville Friday night inside Kitty Magee Arena.
 
Miri Shade totaled 10 kills and 12 digs to obtain her sixth double-double, and Katy Ranes had 41 assists along with 15 digs for her fifth double-double on the year. TAMUK (17-9, 9-5 LSC) tallied 14 blocks against the Pioneers (10-14, 7-8 LSC) to tie the highest total acquired by a TWU opponent in 2017. The 30 errors committed by the Pioneers were a season-high versus an LSC opponent as the team was outhit .110 compared to .248 by the Javelinas.
 
The Pioneers opened the match with a victory by turning a 14-11 advantage into an 18-12 lead. The tone changed in second set when the Javelinas strung together a trio of big runs and ended the match by outscoring TWU 16-4.
 
In the third set, the Pioneers came back to form by racing to a 14-5 lead. A kill by Mayfield kept TWU ahead, 17-10, but TAMUK quickly closed to within 19-16. Caroline Noel provided a kill for a 22-19 edge, but the Pioneers were only able to collect one more point in the set.
 
Trailing 10-7 in set four, Mayfield delivered a kill to close TWU within a pair, but the Javelinas raced ahead with a 12-1 run for a 22-9 advantage. A block by Courtney Noel and Shade cut the deficit to 23-15 before TAMUK took the victory.
 
Head Coach Jeff Huebner said, "I was pleased with the way Katy Ranes really worked to get her middles the ball in the fourth set. We appreciate all the fans, parents, and students coming out to support and raise awareness for leukemia research."
 
The Pioneers host a pair of matches tomorrow with Southeastern Oklahoma State at 2 p.m. and Arkansas-Monticello at 5 p.m.
