Pioneers grab sixth seed in LSC tourney with sweep of UTPB

DENTON, Texas (Nov. 11, 2017) - Texas Woman's University secured the sixth spot in the Lone Star Conference tournament with a 3-0 win (25-16, 25-14, 25-21) over UT Permian Basin Saturday afternoon Kitty Magee Arena with much help from the four Pioneer seniors: Briley Cole-Lewis, Haley Collins, Kerstin Jenkins and Miri Shade.

Shade posted her ninth double-double with a game-high 12 kills and 13 digs, and Cole-Lewis totaled 11 kills. Jenkins posted nine kills and a match-high 19 digs while Collins collected a game-high seven blocks and six kills.

The Pioneers (14-17, 10-10 LSC) posted their highest attack percentage of .277 since their sweep against the Falcons Oct. 13 compared to just .101 by the Falcons (4-25, 1-19 LSC).

Collins, who had not played in a match since Oct. 3, racked up four kills in set one to propel the Pioneers to a set-opening win. In set two, Shade threw down a crosscourt kill in the midst of a 5-0 run for a 9-9 tie. A Collins kill then ignited seven straight points capped by a block from Shade and Collins for a 17-10 lead. Shade finished off the set with a kill for a 2-0 TWU match advantage.

An 8-1 opening to set three established the tone for the Pioneers, including consecutive blocks by Collins and Cole-Lewis. Shade found the back corner for a kill at 16-7, but the Falcons pieced together five straight points for a 23-18 game. Shade then finished off the match on a kill off a block for the victory.

Head Coach Jeff Huebner stated, "A terrific way for our seniors to go out playing amazing volleyball. This group has been so resilient for us, and it showed tonight. To have your four kill leaders be your seniors in order is something special. We are so thankful to our seniors and their families for their trust and support in TWU Volleyball."

The Lone Star Conference Tournament begins Thursday with the sixth-seeded Pioneers facing third-seeded Angelo State Thursday at 12 p.m. The winner of that match will play Friday at 5 p.m.
