Softball unable to grab win in Canyon

CANYON, Texas (February 25, 2017) - Texas Woman's University lost a pair of Lone Star Conference contests to seventh-ranked West Texas A&M Saturday by scores of 16-1 and 12-0 at Shaeffer Park.

West Texas 16, Texas Woman's 1

Katy Stephens tallied the first Pioneer hit of the day on a single through the left side and stole second, but a third strikeout in the first inning ended any scoring chances.

The Lady Buffs went to work early in the bottom of the first by blasting four home runs to account for seven runs. WT began the frame with a pair of singles and two homers sandwiched a walk for a 5-0 lead. Back-to-back solo home runs added two more runs for a 7-0 Lady Buff advantage.

Tori Bice opened the second with a walk and was pushed to second on a Tylia Sylestine single to center field. A groundout advanced both Bice and Sylestine, but both runners were left stranded by the third out. The Lady Buffs added a run in the bottom of the frame to extend the lead to 8-0.

An impressive diving catch by Stephens recorded the first out in the bottom of the third before a WT sacrifice fly scored one runner. A walk with the bases loaded extended the score to 9-0, and an RBI triple to right center made it 13-0.

Katie Hickey registered two strikeouts in the bottom of the fourth, but WT came through with a three-run homer for a 16-0 lead.

Nicole Parnell was hit by a pitch in the top of the fifth and moved to second on a Tara Solomon single to left field. Stephens reached on a fielder's choice while placing Parnell on third, and a walk to Nicole Nordie loaded the bases. Parnell was able to scurry home on a fielder's choice to Hazel Puempel for a Pioneer run.

West Texas A&M 12, Texas Woman's 0

Puempel notched the first hit of game two in the top of the first with a bunt to the catcher and stole second but was left stranded following a third out. In the bottom half, WT took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly.

Melanie Stephens hit past a diving shortstop in inning two, and Parnell nicely placed a bunt to get on base. Solomon reached on a fielder's choice to move Melanie Stephens to third and Solomon stole second but both runners were left stranded.

The Lady Buffs notched a leadoff home run in the bottom of the second for a 2-0 advantage before consecutive singles scored two more. A pair of doubles added four runs before a TWU fielding error brought around two more for a 10-0 lead. WT added one more run in each the third and fourth innings for the 12-0 win.

The Pioneers head back to Denton to host Western New Mexico Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
