Nordie compiles eight hits in wins over WNMU

DENTON, Texas (March 4, 2017) - Nicole Nordie went 8-for-9 at the plate for Texas Woman's University against Western New Mexico as the Pioneers were forced into extra innings during game one in a 9-8 win after leading by seven runs and then run-ruled the Mustangs in five innings during game two with a 9-1 victory Saturday at Pioneer Field.

Texas Woman's 9, Western New Mexico 8 (8 innings)

Nordie notched the first Pioneer hit with a single through the left side in the bottom of the first inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Katy Stephens. An RBI single from Tori Bice scored Nordie for a TWU 1-0 lead.

Abby Walker nailed the foul pole with a shot before garnering a walk in the second inning, and Tara Solomon singled to center field to move pinch runner Nicole Parnell to second. A sacrifice bunt by Morgan Harrison moved the runners up before Nordie sent a single past the second baseman to bring in Parnell. Nordie made her way past the plate on a wild pitch to put TWU up 3-0.

Solomon singled to left field in the third to score Alexis Elizondo, Walker added a run by scampering home on a wild pitch and Nordie brought in Solomon for a 6-0 Pioneer lead.

A Bice homer to deep left field added another run in the fourth, but WNMU managed to put up a pair of runs while facing two outs in the top of the fifth.

Nordie singled down the left field line in the fifth frame for another Pioneer run and an 8-2 lead. The Mustangs homered on the first pitch of the sixth inning and then loaded the bases with back-to-back singles and an error. A sacrifice fly preceded a pair of RBI singles to pull WNMU to within 8-7.

The Mustangs continued their scoring tear in the seventh with an RBI double down the left field line and placed the go-ahead run on third following a wild pitch before a final groundout moved the game to the bottom of the seventh.

Nordie gathered her fifth hit in as many at bats with a double to left center and hurried to third on a wild pitch but was left stranded to force extra innings.

WNMU (0-22, 0-9 LSC) tallied a single in the eighth and put a runner on second by way of a sacrifice bunt but was unable to capitalize and gave TWU a chance. Hazel Puempel walked and moved to second on a Tylia Sylestine single down the left field line. A sacrifice bunt by Hailey Dixon advanced the runners, but an error by the third baseman gave Puempel enough time to get home and give the Pioneers the 9-8 win.

Dixon (3-1) took the win by pitching the final two innings with two hits.

Texas Woman's 9, Western New Mexico 1 (5 innings)

Nordie continued her torrid hitting in game two with a lead off single to right field, and Sylestine tallied an RBI double to put TWU up 1-0. In the bottom of the second Elizondo reached first on an error, stole second, advanced to third on a Melanie Stephens single to shortstop and came home on an RBI from Harrison. Katie Stephens sent a shot to the infield that brought in Melanie Stephens for a 3-0 Pioneer advantage.

With two outs in the top of the fourth, the Mustangs recorded two singles and scored on a fielder's choice for a 3-1 ballgame. With TWU runners on second and third in the bottom half of the frame, Katy Stephens singled to shortstop for an RBI, and a single by Sylestine brought it a trio of Pioneer runners for a 7-0 lead. Bice doubled to center field to push the score to 8-0.

Needing one run in the bottom of the fifth to run-rule the Mustangs, it was Nordie, fittingly, who chalked up her eighth hit of the day on an RBI single to center field to finish the contest.

Dixon registered another win (4-1) on five hits and one walk.

The Pioneers (13-10, 4-5 LSC) hit the road for a non-conference single game at St. Edward's Thursday at 3 p.m. before heading to Texas A&M-Kingsville for an LSC matchup Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
