Pioneers drop game, prepare for LSC tournament

COMMERCE, Texas (April 30, 2017) - Texas Woman's University fell 13-11 to Texas A&M-Commerce during the final game of regular season play as Alexis Elizondo and Tori Bice each tallied four RBI Sunday at Cain Family Field while TWU managed to still clinch the fourth spot in next week's Lone Star Conference Tournament.

TWU will take on fifth-seeded Tarleton State at 1:30 p.m. Friday with the winner advancing to face host and No. 1 seed Angelo State at 6:30 p.m. The championship game will take place Saturday at 2 p.m.

The 24 combined runs between TWU and A&M-Commerce are the most scored this season between the Pioneers and an opponent while six home runs between the two squads tied a season-high.

The Pioneers (32-18, 18-11 LSC) scored first in Sunday's contest on a two-run RBI double by Bice in the top of the first. TWU added another score in the second when Morgan Harrison made it home by way of an illegal pitch.

The Lions (34-19, 16-14 LSC) produced five runs in the second with a three-run triple to right field and a two-run home run to center field to take a 5-3 lead.

Another RBI by Bice pulled TWU to within one run, and Elizondo produced her first triple of the season to knot the score in the third.

The Lions came swinging in the fourth and tallied three home runs for a total of five scores to jump ahead 10-5. Tylia Sylestine and Elizondo responded in the top of the fifth with homers of their own to close the gap to 10-8.

In the sixth, the Pioneers regained the lead, 11-10, on an RBI single by Bice and two more RBI on a single to left field by Elizondo.

A pair of singles by A&M-Commerce in the bottom of the sixth once again put the Lions out in front, 13-11. The Pioneers produced a walk in the top of the seventh but were unable to provide any more offense.
