Pioneers win twin bill to sweep Tarleton State

DENTON, Texas (April 8, 2017) – Texas Woman's University won the series over Tarleton State by sweeping the TexAnns in two games Saturday by scores of 11-7 and 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field.

The Pioneers (24-15, 12-8 LSC) took game two of the series with 11 runs and 10 hits. The TexAnns (29-16, 13-11 LSC) came out to play by plating five runs in the second inning and holding TWU to one run. The Pioneers answered in the bottom of the third scoring by six runs for the only lead change in the game. Katy Stephens homered for the first time this season in the bottom of the third and went two-for-three  and scored two runs along with one RBI in the game.
 
Nicole Nordie nearly hit a home run in the fourth, but Tarleton's center fielder reached to make the out. The TexAnns also made two pitching changes during the inning. The Pioneers added three runs to the board for a 10-7 lead.
 
Katie Hickey (1-1) earned her first win on the season while Tori Bice and Abby Walker also pitched. Hailey Dixon closed by pitching 3.1 innings and facing 14 batters.
 
Bice had a hot bat matching Stephens going two-for-three with two runs and one RBI. Alexis Elizondo was essential to the lineup in scoring three runs. Hazel Puempel excelled defending first base with eight putouts.

Solomon was the first to score for the Pioneers in the bottom of the third when Stephens singled to right center. Elizondo added another RBI to her stats when she scored in the fourth on a single by Morgan Harrison.
 
The big hit came from Nordie who showed power with her fifth home run of the season. Nordie leads TWU in batting average with an impressive .479 and a slugging percentage of .661.
 
The duo of Stephens and Solomon echoed the score from the third again in the sixth when Stephens singled to send Solomon through home plate.
 
Walker (13-6) recorded the win in a complete game with four strikeouts and only allowing three hits after facing 25 batters.
 
The Pioneers will travel to Wichita Falls, Texas, next Thursday and Friday to face Midwestern State.
