Mayfield, Noel put Pioneers back on winning track

LAWTON, Okla. (Sept. 30, 2017) - Makayla Mayfield and Courtney Noel each tied season-highs in kills as Texas Woman's University defeated Cameron in four sets inside Aggie Gym Saturday afternoon.

The 12 kills by Noel and 11 by Mayfield paced the Pioneers (5-9, 3-3 LSC) in the four-set victory (25-22, 26-24, 25-19, 25-15). Mayfield added 10 digs for the ninth double-double of her career, while Katy Ranes posted a game-high 47 assists, and Noel and Haley Collins tallied five blocks apiece.

In the only TWU set loss of the contest, the Aggies (4-10, 2-5 LSC) jumped out to a 4-0 and 7-2 advantage. The Pioneers closed to within 23-12, but CU went ahead for the 1-0 match lead.

A kill by Noel in set two handed TWU a 7-6 lead, and the Pioneers were able to hang on throughout the set. Haley Collins provided a kill and block alongside Collins for a 16-10 edge before the Aggies closed to within 21-20. CU came back to tie the contest at 24-all, but Mayfield and Miri Shade provided kills to tie the match at one set each.

Despite falling into an early 4-0 deficit, the Pioneers charged back to tie set three at 11-11. A kill by Shade handed TWU a 14-12 lead and another by Noel put the Pioneers up 20-15. Shade provided the last pair of kills for TWU to take the match lead.

Kills by Collins and Noel and an ace by Bailey French put the Pioneers up 10-5 in set three. A kill by Mayfield doubled up the Aggies at 14-7, and a kill by Collins increased the lead to 21-13 before a block by Ranes and Noel finished off the match.

Head Coach Jeff Huebner said, "Proud of our kids for being resilient through a tough environment and really finding a way to win."
