Pioneer offense pounds Greyhounds

DENTON, Texas  - Texas Woman's used a balanced attack to tally a .333 hitting percentage that put away Eastern New Mexico Friday night in three sets, 25-15, 25-18, 25-18.

The Pioneers (12-7, 4-5 LSC) started strong and maintained their offensive momentum with a flurry of attacks against the Greyhounds (7-11, 5-5 LSC) that kept them in the lead throughout the first two sets.

"Our athletes didn't want to be complacent, they wanted to be up by a lot," TWU head coach Jeff Huebner said. "We talked a lot about it, watched a lot of video and continued to push to extend the lead in practice and really execute and capitalize on those skill sets."

Early kills by freshmen Trixie Oche and Elizabeth Ugbaja and junior Courtney Noel in the first set gave the Pioneers an early lead, and errors by the Greyhounds offense prevented them from making any significant inroads. A Greyhound service error gave set point to TWU.

The second set saw Ugbaja and freshman Taylor Frederick coming out of the gate strong, with Noel and junior Maggie Pyles filling in the gaps and going on a seven-point run to stretch the lead to 14-4. Oche ended the set with a hard kill off an assist from junior Katy Ranes.

"I thought Frederick had her best match as a Pioneer for us this year," Huebner said. "It's really important for us to have an outside hitter who can hit consistently like that."

Ranes started the third set off right with the Pioneers' only service ace of the night, but the Greyhounds managed to briefly pull ahead at 4-3 and 5-3 when TWU faltered briefly with errors. It wasn't long though before the Pioneers ran off five straight points that kept them out front with Ugbaja hitting the game-winning point at 25-19.

"When Frederick, Ugbaja, Pyles and Courtney play like they did tonight, Katy has a lot of options and we just want her to make the best decision with every ball," Huebner said. "It happened today that she had four people who played really great."

The Pioneers kept their attack spread out with Pyles, Ugbaja and Frederick all tied for attacks at 22, and Pyles, Ugbaja and Noel tied with each leading the game with 11 kills. LSC assists leader Ranes added another forty assists to her total, with digs leader junior Bailey French racking up another 14.  Freshman Kenna Muff, who had one kill, no errors and nine digs, also contributed to the Pioneers win.

"Kenna Muff, she was really important for us as she played with great energy, and she was calm and cool," Huebner said. "She's a real gamer, and she really drives on that competitive experience."

Texas Woman's is back at it tomorrow against West Texas A&M (10-7, 5-4 LSC) at 2 p.m. for the Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Game.
