LAWTON, Okla. (Feb. 17, 2018) - Texas Woman's University was held to just two hits in a 2-0 loss at Cameron Saturday afternoon in game one of a three-game series in their Lone Star Conference season opener on McMahon Field.
Â
Lindy Kennedy and
Avery Williams each provided a hit for the Pioneers (6-4, 0-1 LSC) and tallied a stolen base.
Â
Puempel led the contest off with a walk and stolen base, and
Tylia Sylestine joined her on the bases with a walk of her own. A sacrifice bunt by
Cheyenne Mahy advanced Puempel and Sylestine, but a groundout eliminated any scoring opportunities for
TWU.
Â
The Pioneers put themselves in scoring position again in the top of the third beginning with a single up the middle by Kennedy. Kennedy stole second and made it to third on Sylestine's at bat, but another groundout ended the inning.
Â
Cameron (9-3, 1-0 LSC) found their offense in the bottom of the third with a single through the right side and a sacrifice bunt. A double to left field scored the first run of the afternoon, and a shot to center field added another for a 2-0 Aggie lead.
Â
Tara Solomon was hit by a pitch in the fifth and made it to second on a Puempel at bat, but the inning ended with a strike out. The Pioneers were unable to place any more runners on base throughout the rest of the game.
Â
Abby Walker (2-3) took the loss with four hits and seven strikeouts.
Â
Head Coach
Genny Stidham said, "We need to hit the ball if we want to compete."
Â
TWU and CU continue the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
