TWU defeated in LSC opener

LAWTON, Okla. (Feb. 17, 2018) - Texas Woman's University was held to just two hits in a 2-0 loss at Cameron Saturday afternoon in game one of a three-game series in their Lone Star Conference season opener on McMahon Field.

Lindy Kennedy and Avery Williams each provided a hit for the Pioneers (6-4, 0-1 LSC) and tallied a stolen base.

Puempel led the contest off with a walk and stolen base, and Tylia Sylestine joined her on the bases with a walk of her own. A sacrifice bunt by Cheyenne Mahy advanced Puempel and Sylestine, but a groundout eliminated any scoring opportunities for
TWU.

The Pioneers put themselves in scoring position again in the top of the third beginning with a single up the middle by Kennedy. Kennedy stole second and made it to third on Sylestine's at bat, but another groundout ended the inning.

Cameron (9-3, 1-0 LSC) found their offense in the bottom of the third with a single through the right side and a sacrifice bunt. A double to left field scored the first run of the afternoon, and a shot to center field added another for a 2-0 Aggie lead.

Tara Solomon was hit by a pitch in the fifth and made it to second on a Puempel at bat, but the inning ended with a strike out. The Pioneers were unable to place any more runners on base throughout the rest of the game.

Abby Walker (2-3) took the loss with four hits and seven strikeouts.

Head Coach Genny Stidham said, "We need to hit the ball if we want to compete."

TWU and CU continue the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
