Pioneers outplayed by No. 25 Lady Buffs

DENTON, Texas (Feb. 3, 2018) - Texas Woman's University basketball suffered their largest defeat of the season in a 74-38 loss to 25th-ranked West Texas A&M Saturday inside Kitty Magee Arena in which the Pioneers amassed several season-lows.
 
TWU (8-12, 5-9 LSC) mustered 14 field goals with two assists in the contest on less than 26-percent shooting and grabbed 26 rebounds compared to 46 by WT (18-4, 10-4 LSC). The Pioneers improved in the second half by scoring 24 points - 10 more than the previous two quarters combined. KJ Stastny and Bri'anna Gray each scored nine points, while Alexis Nezianya contributed eight points and a game-high eight rebounds.
 
The Lady Buffs opened the game on a 14-2 run within the first five minutes before Nezianya put up a score in the paint. Ma'K'La Woods made a layup, and Nezianya hit a jumper to cut the deficit to 19-8 before WT nailed a three to go up 22-8 after one quarter of play.
 
The Pioneers went scoreless for nearly five minutes to open the second period while WT scored 14 unanswered points to increase their lead to 38-8. Stastny made two free throws, and Nezianya and Gray each tallied a bucket in the paint to pull within 38-14 before the Lady Buff scored for a 40-14 halftime advantage.
 
Jumpers by Whitney Apari and Morgan Easley in the third quarter made it 42-18, but WT went up by 30 once again on a three-pointer with three minutes to play in the period. Gray hit a three and Desiree Phipps converted a fast break layup before the Lady Buffs outscored the Pioneers by nine to end the game.
 
Head Coach Beth Jillson said, "I was disappointed in our energy and effort tonight. We didn't share the ball or play as team and weren't connected defensively. We need to learn from it improve in our next game."
 
The Pioneers are at home again next with to play Eastern New Mexico Thursday at 7 p.m. and Western New Mexico Saturday at 2 p.m.
