Softball extends win streak to five with sweep over St. Edward’s

DENTON, Texas (March 21, 2018) - Texas Woman's University took a pair of victories against non-conference opponent St. Edward's Wednesday evening at Pioneer Field to increase their season-long win streak to five games.

A St. Edward's 3-26, 3-10 Heartland) bunt single scored the first run of the afternoon in the top of the first before Lindy Kennedy stole home and Abby Walker doubled down the left field line to give the Pioneers (20-10, 8-4 LSC) a 2-1 advantage.
 
A single by the Hilltoppers in the second added a run, and a TWU wild pitch allowed a runner in for a 3-2 SEU edge. Melanie Stephens was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the inning and advanced to second on a groundout. A Tara Solomon single through the right side brought in Stephens for a 3-3 tie.
 
SEU regained the lead at 4-3 in the third thanks to a single a double. Hazel Puempel singled down the right field line in the bottom of the fourth to score Kennedy and Solomon to give the lead back to the Pioneers at 5-4.
 
An Erin Mosely single to left center scored pinch runner Kenzie Wilson for a two-run TWU lead in the fifth before the Pioneers added to their total in the next inning. With the bases loaded on several occasions, Walker, Wilson, and Mosely each earned a walk for a trio of runs. Solomon singled through the left side for two more and an 11-4 Pioneer lead before three final outs concluded the contest.
 
Walker (9-7) took the win with one run on four hits, three strikeouts and a walk.

SEU was again the first to score in game two as a walk with the bases filled brought in a runner. The Pioneers answered in the bottom of the frame with five doubles that attributed to four runs.
 
A TWU wild pitch and passed ball led to a run, and a single through the right side pulled SEU to within one. A double by Jordan Kisselburg in the third led to an RBI single from Cheyenne Mahy for a 5-3 Pioneer edge.
 
A throwing error by the Pioneers led to a Hilltopper score in the top of the fifth, but a double by Kennedy turned into a score on an RBI single by Marisa Arriaga to put the Pioneers in front, 7-4.
 
Solomon and Puempel began the bottom of the sixth with singles, and each scored on a Tylia Sylestine at bat. Mahy sent a three-run shot over the left field fence for the 10-4 TWU lead.
 
Head Coach Genny Stidham said, "Two wins is two wins."
 
The Pioneers host No. 5 Angelo State Friday at 6 p.m. for a single game and Saturday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader.
