Pioneers start strong but fall to #23 Lions

COMMERCE, Texas (Sept. 11, 2018) - While both Texas Woman's and #23 Texas A&M–Commerce were looking to end two-game losing streaks Tuesday night, it was the Lions who ended up taking home the victory, 3-1 (25-22, 15-25, 20-25, 16-25).

TWU (6-5) won the first set 25-21 after a series of errors by the Lions (8-4). TAMUC fought back hard to even the score in a set marked by long rallies before the potent combination of senior outside hitter Makayla Mayfield and junior setter Katy Ranes gave the set point to the Pioneers.

"There was some really good things in our match, we made some great decisions with the ball, but we had a hard time following through with it," TWU head coach Jeff Huebner said.

The Lions would not take that lost set lying down, however, managing impressive point streaks, especially by senior middle blocker Jaslyn Wacker. The formula for the rest of the game was both teams matching point for point until about mid-set when the Lions started widening the gap. Several times throughout the game Commerce achieved a double-digit lead against TWU, including a nine-point streak in set two before the Pioneers were able to put one back on the board.

Mayfield led in attacks once again with 46 and Ranes continued to lead in blocks 33, while junior libero Bailey French registered 20 digs. TWU scored a hit percentage of .124 to TAMU-C's .240, but led in service aces 5-4.

"Right now we're a good team, but if we want to be a great team we need to make adjustments," Huebner said.

The Pioneers look to get back in the win column Friday when they return home to face Texas A&M – Kingsville at noon in another Lone Star Conference contest.
