Pioneers fall after early Patriot goal

DENTON, Texas – An unfortunate error in the opening minutes that resulted in a Dallas Baptist goal was too much for Texas Woman's to overcome in a 1-0 non-conference loss at Pioneer Soccer Park Monday night.

Regional rivals TWU (3-3-0, 0-0-0 LSC) and DBU (3-2-1, 2-0-0 HC) faced off in their last non-conference contest before the Patriots are integrated into the Lone Star Conference with eight other Heartland Conference teams next year. Texas Woman's hoped to enact revenge for their 2017 loss at Dallas Baptist but came up short.

At 3:59, DBU junior Katelyn Havard sent a cross in from the right side that was misjudged by the Pioneer defense. The Patriots' Delaney Schmidt redirected the shot with a header right past Pioneer freshman goalkeeper Jazmine Maxwell to put DBU on the board early, 1-0.

"It's disappointing to give up a goal in the first five minutes," TWU head coach Babak Abouzar said. "We have to play catch-up from there. It was just bad communication; nine times out of ten that doesn't happen."

The Patriots kept the Pioneers working in the first half to get control of the ball, making six attempts to score, four on goal, to the Pioneers' three shots. TWU picked things up towards the end of the first, mustering a light offensive surge before halftime.

TWU began the second half with more urgency on the ball and tested the DBU defense often. The Pioneers ended with seven shots to the Patriots' 13.

"I was happy to see that the effort and the execution was a lot better in the second half," Abouzar said. "For me, I feel like we ran out of time. We were knocking on the doorstep."

Pioneer freshman Riley Sutton led the game in shots with three, one on goal, with junior Maddi Nolton notching two attempts. Sophomore Haley Ward, who leads the LSC in shots (29) and shots per game (4.83), worked hard on offense but was kept to one shot.

Texas Woman's goes on the road to start LSC play, heading to Canyon to take on West Texas A&M (5-1-0, 0-0-0 LSC) Friday night.
