Pioneers win fifth straight with sweep

DENTON, Texas – Texas Woman's ended a perfect five-game home stand with a sweep over Lone Star Conference foe Cameron, 25-11, 25-16, 25-18, Saturday afternoon in Magee Arena.  The victory lifts TWU's overall record to 11-5 and evens their LSC record at 3-3.

The Pioneers started strong right out of the gate, keeping a significant lead over the Aggies (2-14, 0-6 LSC) thanks to a number of five- and six-point streaks that kept their kill percentage at .286 to the Aggies -.179. Freshman Isabel Vega was a powerhouse on attacks, getting four kills for the Pioneers out of seven attacks. Errors on Cameron's side ended the set for Texas Woman's at 25-11.

The second set saw the Aggies improve, but they still unable to keep up with all of the different weapons used by the Pioneers. Conference assist-leader Katy Ranes kept the attack spread out, upping her assists from the first set and giving TWU plenty of opportunity to extend its lead. A service ace by freshman Kenna Muff gave the Pioneers the set at 25-16.

"[Ranes] has done a really good job for us creating successful opportunities for hitters," TWU head coach Jeff Huebner said. "You can see it in our hitting efficiencies."

The Aggies continued to make adjustments to the Pioneers' onslaught, keeping the third set close and taking the lead for a short time before conceding, 25-18, on a kill from junior Courtney Noel.

"We'd been making a few too many errors," Huebner said about the third set. "They had 12 points at the timeout and we had eight errors, so we talked about controlling our decision-making and after that timeout we only made two more errors."

Noel topped the charts on kills, bringing in 15 for Texas Woman's and hitting .478. LSC digs leader junior Bailey French tallied 13, while Ranes totaled 39 assists. The Pioneers hit at a clip of .301 for the match.

Up next for the Pioneers is their longest conference road trip as they head to Western New Mexico for a Friday 6 p.m. contest.
