Pioneers Fall in Overtime to Westminster College

DENTON, Texas - Texas Woman's suffered its first loss of the season in a 2-1 overtime decision to Westminster College at home for the grand opening of the team's new venue, Pioneer Soccer Park.

Following a reschedule of the game to an earlier start due to the weather forecast, the Pioneers (1-1) faced the Griffins (1-1) for their second game of the season. Pioneer head coach Babak Abouzar said his team performed strongly, especially in the first 20 minutes of play, but took a downward turn as the game progressed.

"If we made a mistake we bounced back from it and we didn't let things get to us," Abouzar said. "We made some changes that didn't increase the level the way we thought it would, but that's soccer. It's a roller-coaster."

WC got on the board first when senior midfielder Allie Millerberg sent a header into the goal at 30:25 off a corner kick from junior midfielder Gabriella Riche.

The teams went into halftime with the Griffins leading, 1-0, and with the Pioneers taking six shots in the first half too WC's three.

With the clock winding down, the Pioneers pressed on the attack. Sophomore midfielder Jazmine Navarro took a corner on the right side that found senior midfielder Libby Murphy.  Her shot was deflected by a WC defender but found the feet of sophomore forward Haley Ward.  Ward punched it through the right side and got the equalizer for TWU at 88:24.

Tied at one, the game went into overtime where a header off a corner kick again got past the TWU defense. WC senior midfielder Libby Dearden got the golden goal at 96:12 for the Griffins' first win of the season.

TWU's next game is on the road Thursday, Sept. 6, at Southern Nazarene (1-1) in Bethany, Okla.  The Pioneers return home on Saturday, Sept. 8, to face Dallas Baptist (0-1-1) at 7 p.m.
