DENTON — An
Abigail Martinez penalty kick in the 17th minute was the difference in a pivotal Lone Star Conference showdown as Texas Woman's defeated Angelo State, 1-0 on a frigid night at Pioneer Soccer Park.
"Angelo is a tough team," head coach
Babak Abouzar said following the match. "They've been a perennial power in the conference for years. We knew it was going to be a battle."
The match, originally scheduled for the night before, featured two of the conference's premiere teams. With just one point separating the two teams in the standings, the Pioneers executed their game plan to perfection, controlling possession for most of the contest.
"We created a lot of good opportunities," Abouzar said. "Our team did an amazing job of – making sure we got the result we needed."
Out shooting the Rambelles 6-0 in the first half, the Pioneers kept the pressure, placing seven shots on goal in the match versus just two for ASU.
This was the seventh shutout of the season for the Pioneers, which was once again anchored by goalkeeper
Daniela Marin who recorded two saves in the match.
"It is a blessing," senior defender
Brittany Jones said. "Every time the ball gets past the line, I still have faith because I know Dani is behind me."
Tomorrow night, the Pioneers will host St. Edward's on Senior Day in the final home regular season match of the year, at 7 p.m.
