OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 11, 2019) — On Monday, Texas Woman's wrapped up play at the OC/UCO Invitational with a thrilling come-from-behind victory over co-host Oklahoma Christian, defeating the Eagles, 4-3.
"The message really was the same that it was yesterday," head coach
Amber Barker said postgame. "That we fight for everything until the very last pitch."
Trailing 2-0 after the first inning, the Pioneers battled, striking for their first run of the game in the top of the second when
Tara Solomon drove in
Kalina Sato on a fielder's choice.
An Eagle run in the bottom of the frame pushed the Pioneer deficit to 3-1. Then, in the sixth inning, after working the bases loaded,
Lindy Kennedy drew a walk to cut the lead down to a single run.
In the seventh, the Pioneers showed discipline at the plate, as
Sydney Johnson,
Taylor Goulet,
Jordan Kisselburg and
Krista Cuevas all reached base.
Kisselburg, who picked up the win in the circle, drew a walk with the bases loaded to tie the game. Cuevas would follow suit, giving the Pioneers the 4-3 lead.
"Jordan did a heck of a job coming into the game and handling her own in the circle," Barker said. "She gave the defense and opportunity to make plays behind her."
Kisselburg finished the game with two strikeouts, conceding only one walk and three hits in five innings of work.
"Across the board, this team has shown some grit," Barker added. "We just have to come out on fire from inning one."
The Pioneers now set their sights on conference play starting on Friday when they travel to face Texas A&M-Kingsville for a three-game series.
"The players know we have areas to continue working on," Barker added. "But closing out this tournament with a win will hopefully help increase their confidence."
