DENTON (Feb. 23, 2019) — Playing its first home games of the season at newly minted Dianne Baker Field, Texas Woman's hosted Eastern New Mexico, dropping the first two games of the weekend series on Saturday.
"We had a great crowd today," head coach
Amber Barker said. "It was really nice to have all of that support behind us."
Not only the home opener for the Pioneers, it was also the team's Breast Cancer Awareness game. The day began with a special ceremonial first pitch from 11-year breast cancer survivor, and the mother of the Pioneers' head softball coach, Mrs. Debra Miles Gordon.
"It was awesome," Barker said. "She got a little teary-eyed and so did I. It was great to have her out there."
The Pioneers opened Game 1 by taking a 2-1 lead courtesy of a two-RBI single from
Sydney Johnson in the second inning. That was until the Greyhounds struck for nine-unanswered runs through the next three innings.
A four-run bottom of the fifth for the Pioneers kept them within striking distance as Sara LaChance,
Paige Tamayo,
Bailey Turner and
Lindy Kennedy each collected an RBI apiece.
Johnson would lead the Pioneers with three hits and three RBI while Turned and Kennedy each produced multi-hit games with a pair of hits apiece.
Game 2 followed a slightly different script as the Pioneers took a 2-0 lead early in the ball game behind a strong start from Turner.
The junior tossed five shutout innings before running into trouble in the sixth. Four runs from the Greyhounds took the game from the Pioneers who will now look towards tomorrow's series finale.
Offensively,
Tylia Sylestine led the charge by going 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk.
"We hope to show up strong like we did last weekend at Kingsville," Barker said. "We went down two games and then came out fighting the third game. We hope that team shows up tomorrow."
The series finale between the Pioneers and the Greyhounds will begin at 1 p.m. Free admission will be available to all fans in attendance at Dianne Baker Field.
