DENTON (April 26, 2019) — A complete-game, six-strikeout performance from
Bailey Turner wasn't enough to propel Texas Woman's to victory over Western New Mexico on Friday night as the Pioneers fell 2-0.
"Bailey and, for the most part, our bullpen has been doing a great job all year," head coach
Amber Barker said. "We just haven't been giving them the offensive support."
After conceding the go-ahead run in the top of the first inning, Turner kept the Pioneers in the game, holding the Mustangs scoreless through the next four innings.
The Pioneers had their chances but couldn't capitalize as they left six runners on base. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh and in need of a spark, Barker called on
Tatum Stover to pinch hit at the start of the inning. The freshman would deliver as she connected on a 1-2 pitch for a single up the middle before the rally would stall on three-consecutive outs.
Prior to the start of the game, distinguished TWU Alumna, hall of famer and former head coach, Dianne Baker, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Baker did so as a sign of solidarity and to encourage inclusion amongst all people on what was TWU's first-ever Pride Game.
"It means a ton," Barker said. "It's really important to us and one of the reasons Coach Baker wanted to throw out the first pitch because she wanted to stand in solidarity."
TWU will finish the 2019 season tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Following the two games, the Senior Day ceremony will take place as the graduating class will be honored with a special on-field presentation.
